A day in the Prague zoo

Wed 27 Feb, 2013

The zoo is a form of meditation to me. Whenever I get the chance, especially when I feel the blues, I ll go to the local zoo. Last week, I was in Prague for a business trip and had the opportunity to visit the Prague zoo, considered by many as one of the top 20 in the world. Unfortunately the weather conditions were far from ideal, freezing temperatures and snowing and most of the animals preferred to stay inside. Some others – polar bears, amur leopards, great grey owls, siberian tigers and bisons – felt very comfortable and enjoyed the cold. It goes without saying that the zoo has nice indoor habitats for species that cannot bear low temperatures. To my regret, I missed the newborn orangutan since the Borneo jungle venue was closed to visitors until the baby gets a little older.

I was traveling “light”, meaning that I carried the Oly OMD EM-5 together with the 100-300mm and the primes (12mm, 45mm & 20mm) and the Canon Powershot S100, all fit in the small Restrospect 5. I was glad I brought a pair of thin fleece gloves that kept me warm, as I could operate the controls of the OMD without removing them. I stayed for 4 hours, short but enough to make me happy through the weekend.
