Chios is a big – for Greek standards – island in the north east Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish coast of Izmir. We ended up a big party of five adults and five kids planned to spend our August vacation in the Chios and Ionia.
Ionia, is a region with strong Greek influence and significant archaeological interest. The largest city, Izmir was populated by a Greek majority until 1922, when the “Minor Asia Catastrophe” happened. This event marked modern Greek history, so the trip presented an opportunity to see this area that we learned so much about in the school history courses. The trip proved a great eye opening experience and I recommend highly.
